The definitive textbook if you are a rockhound in WI! The only thing that detracts from it's value is the image format. In the 19th century, crosshatching, shading and line direction was all that was available. The updates and re-releases of the book have retained the original images. The editors should have added modern images to make the visual information more accessible.
Other than that one complaint, the book is the most thorough text I have seen. Even at the level of detail included by the author, it is eminently readable and accessible to the less technical reader. This text is still used by the University of Wisconsin for their Intro to Geography classes in Madison.
PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY OF WISCONSIN by Lawrence Martin is a highly-readable book about Wisconsin's geology, where an emphasis is on the glacial landscape. The book is readable by the layperson, and no background in geology or in minerology is needed. I lived in Wisconsin from 1980 to 1984, and at that time, I bought this book and two other books about Wisconsin's geology. Also, I bought a multi-colored maps showing the glacial features of Dane County. The book by Lawrence Martin is the best of the three books that I bought. The other two books that I bought were Geology of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan by Richard A. Paull, and Wisconsin Through 5 Billion Years of Change by Crowns and Boyer. An understanding of Wisconsin's glacial landscape is essential, if you want to understand the work of geologist of J. Harlan Bretz, as it applies to the Channeled Scablands in Eastern Washington. In fact, Dr. Bretz's earliest geology work included explorations and analysis of the glacial landscape at Devil's Lake, Wisconsin. Dr. Bretz's knowledge of the traditional, normal glacial landscape as is found in Wisconsin enabled Dr. Bretz to perceive, analyze, and characterize the strange and non-traditional glacial landscape found in the Channeled Scablands.
Regarding the book under review, I enjoyed learning about these features of Wisconsin's glacial landscape (1) Drumlins; (2) Moraines; (3) Kettles and kettle moraines; (4) Nunataks; (5) Monadnocks; (6) Eskers; (7) Kames; (8) Glacial drift; (9) Driftless Area and the reason why Driftless Area has caves but other parts of Wisconsin do not have caves. Shortly after moving to Wisconsin in 1980, my introduction to Wisconsin's geology took the form of a song by PIPER ROAD STRING BAND called KETTLE MORAINE. Although the song is really about a girl living in a kettle moraine, and is not about the kettle moraine itself, this song initiated my interest in geology. From this book, I learned that a "kettle" is created when a glacier shoves a huge block of ice (a block the size of a skyscraper) into the side of a hill or mountain, and shoves a bunch of boulders around the huge block of ice. Eventually, when all the ice melts, what is left is a hill with large indentation or cavity, which had earlier been occupied by the block of ice.
My clogging group, the Kickapoo Cloggers, performed at various bluegrass festivals around Wisconsin. When we performed at the Tomorrow River festival in Amherst, I was able to recognize "glacial drift" because of what I learned from this book. When we performed at Mount Horeb at Southern Wisconsin Bluegrass Association festival, I was able to understand that this cave existed because the glaciers from Wisconsin's ice age never made it as far as Mount Horeb, and therefore, were never able to squash and destroy the cave at Mount Horeb. When my friends and I visited Devil's Lake, I was able to understand the glacial origin of this lake, because of what I'd learned from this book. FIVE STARS for this beautifully written and relevant book.
The Physical Geography of Wisconsin is in it's second reprint here, and that was done in the 30s. There actually is not much here that is new, as you will find. The first version sliced and diced a Wisconsin that was even earlier that than. Discussions of Kettle Moraine terms and features, Wetlands and Forests and Plains, it's all here. Most all of it is still here, if you can make allowances for Civilization which occurred since.
You get a good foundation of terms and types of the Land. Martin, a pioneer in this field, wants to bring you out of your easy chair, and get you into habitats. That should not be hard when you have a guide like this.
I have seen similar studies, done within the last 10 years, and they quote Martin extensively, even down to lifting his drawings of a given eco-type. You can have the original right here in your hands. I needed to order it through , as I could not imagine finding a 1930-ish book at my local 2nd hand store. They came though for me.
This book serves as a companion to The Vegetation of Wisconsin, by John T Curtis. Martin takes you through the nooks and crannies. Curtis tells you, and it's on close to presettlement conditions, what was growing there. Such a map! The Physical Geography of Wisconsin
